Exemplifying TNDC Values (Safety, Integrity, Respect, Diversity, High Performance)

Winner: Crystal Dennis, Maintenance Supervisor

Nominated By: Dan Edzerza, Operator

Positive Behaviour Witnessed/Outcome:

Crystal enthusiastically took on the new task of being a supervisor. She was a Rock Truck Driver during the construction season and in mid-September 2023, TNDC Construction Management moved her into a Foreman role. Crystal has settled into her new position extremely well. The Construction Management team have received great feedback from the field with respect to Crystal’s performance in her new role. She is doing very well in learning new tasks and bonding with the crew. Above all else, she has a positive attitude. From her work performance to her attitude, Crystal consistently exemplifies TNDC’s Values.

Going Above and Beyond (to solve a problem or get the job done)

Winner: Chuck Walker, Equipment Operator

Nominated By: Michelle Telep, Rock Truck Driver

Positive Behaviour Witnessed/Outcome:

Over the 2023 Construction season, Chuck repeatedly took time to stop, get out of the equipment and thoroughly explain the work we would be completing. In addition to explaining safety procedures and the way to complete the job safely, he taught me more about efficiency and how to maneuver a rock truck in areas I had not been before. I felt very safe and comfortable working with Chuck. He was respectful and patient. As a result of his guidance, I feel like my skill level has improved exponentially. I have learned more about operating the rock truck and am more confident in the work to be done.

Living and role modelling our Safety Values (Safety First, Safety Always)

Winner: Jason Sissons, Laborer – TNDC Maintenance

Nominated By: Rob Perrin, Mechanical Supervisor

Positive Behaviour Witnessed/Outcome:

From his very first day, Jason has exemplified TNDC’s safety values. He has justly earned the respect of his teammates through practicing and sharing safety values. Jason takes the “if you see it then you own it” mantra seriously; he continuously notices hazards and takes initiative immediately to do something about it. One recent instance cements his commitment to “safety is everyone’s responsibility”.

During a safety toolbox meeting we were reminded that everyone, driving any kind of equipment, needs to ensure their headlights and taillights are clearly visible, due to muddy conditions around the site. After the meeting Jason went out with clean rags, paper towel and glass cleaner and cleaned every single headlight, taillight and mirror on every piece of equipment in the TNDC maintenance yard. Nobody told him to do that nor was it part of his job description.

The outcome of Jason’s simple act is immeasurable and could easily have prevented a very serious incident. He showed the entire maintenance team what it is to lead by example and eliminate a hazard even when it isn’t technically within one’s job scope/description.
